When we see changes in society bringing legal changes the same can be said with social change it is a two way street. Efficiency of law as instrument of social change (evans 1965: authoritative and prestigious source (ex. For example advocating marijuana: quick vs. slow enforcement i, enforcement agencies committed to change, +ve & -ve sanctions i. Rewards or punishments that a society sets up to enforce the norms i. i. Negative sanction: fines and imprisonment: reasonable enforcement i. Protection and resources provided for rights of individuals suffering if others violate the new law ii. Authority: occurs when there is probability that people will obey a specific command. Legitimate authority: occurs when people obey the authority because they regard it as fair and just obligation to obey the law simply because it is law. Traditional authority: obligation of obedience arises from personal loyalty, eg rule of elders .
