Explore major elements of criminal event: including offender, victim, bystander, police and social setting. To understand how & why crime occurs, focus on: Precursors locational & situational factors that bring people together in time and space. Transactions exchanges that take place during event and situational context. Aftermath conseq of crime including harm to victim, punishment of offender and public reaction. Cannot be separated from physical and social setting. Incidents occur under specific circumstances and involve specific types of people: systematic accidents (felson, 1987) based on choices people make; impacts likelihood of being victimized. Choices we make to spend money and do things makes us more or less offenders/victims. Criminal event has an episodic quality: has beginning and end able to pinpoint initiation and conclusion of crime. Interactions b/w people: behaviour of each participant intersects w/ and influence behaviour of other participants.
