Document Summary
Nature of disputes changed with emergence of the state. Usually made up of eldest married men, based on wealth and influence. Either inherited chieftainship or gained through some sort of supernatural knowledge. Usually would choose their own successor; were rich men from influential families. Had power to punish and could intervene without being asked. From tribalism to feudalism (1000 to 1500 ad) People started to care more about themselves and their family rather than the collective group. Trial by ordeals: walking on hot coals for ex. , if they were burnt you were guilty; water/drowning - if you were innocent god would intervene and save you. Kin based dispute settlement practices undermined and replaced by feudal lords and their laws. System of courts and common law replaced individual and kin-based redress. Fines would go to the king; you would be breaking the king"s peace.
