Social construction of reality: we as social beings draw the lines around behavior to define criminal from not criminal, acceptable from unacceptable, appropriate form inappropriate, etc. The development of rules in society is a process that involves a variety of social actors: Moral entrepreneurs: rule creators, express with a level of conviction that some kind of threatening social evil exists and must be combatted, moral crusaders, rule enforcers, those who enforce the rules. Much of what people come to think about current events comes not from direct experience but from meida reports. In many repsects, these media reports, with the exception of those broadcast via social media, reflects our vonventional methods of knowing. News medias have been accused of causing moral panics by publishing sensationalistic accounts social ills. Moran panics refers to widespread exaggerated public concern over issues associated with morality (prostitution, pornography) Other examples of moral panics: youth culture.
