Psychoanalytic theory and weaknesses: untestable, you can not measure these abstract concepts, circular, no evidence that criminals seek to be punished, psychoanalytic methods unsuccessful rehabilitation, not all offenders show guilt. Kohlberg"s theory of moral development: level 1: preconvention morality, stage 1: punishment and obedience orientation, the goodness/badness of an act are based on consequences. Individuals start to think about what others think of them: actions start to be based on intent, stage 4: authority maintaining morality. "if i do this, am i going to be pointed out?: children as young as 3 years old use intentions to judge behaviours, someone did something on purpose or by accident.
