Methodologies: self report, ethnography, where you go out in the field and observe the culture, qualitative approach to studying people and their behaviours, longitudinal studies, several data time points, cross sectional is only one point in time, better explanations about why things happen, combination is great. What do we know: pros for recording race, for research, cons, wouldn"t want the public to see discrimination, availability of data, official statistics & the police. Aboriginal youth: aboriginal youth are overrepresented in detention facilities, complex issue, tied to historic and structural factors facing aboriginals, context: substance abuse & resulting violence (often inflicted, suicide among aboriginal youth, why might aboriginal youth turn to gangs, sense of identity, purpose, survival tactic. Differential selection *****: number of reasons for higher rates of visible minorities because of selection, differing police presence, differential processing, harsher sentence, more likely to spend a lot of time in prison, criminal justice at every level are racist.
