How are girls and boys viewed differently in regards to crime. Reify claims about rise in youth delinquency. Concentrates public attention on and fuels a new wave of violent teenage youth. Crimes tend to be very serious, and get a lot of public attention. Example: reena virk case (might be a long answer question) 14 year old girl beaten and drowned by peers: lured by friends to a party under a secluded bridge. Battered and bloodied, she managed to get up and stagger across the bridge towards bus to make her way home: they found her and dragged her back and beat her again. 6 youth charged and convicted of aggravated assault; 2 tried for second degree murder. 7 of the 8 beaters = female. Lead to a construction of the criminalized youth. Highly sensationalized, horrific events impression not only that more girls are involved in crime today, but that young females have become increasingly violent.
