Class notes: test next thursday, covers everything we"ve done so far. Some differences with phenomenology, but share a lot of the same characteristics. The study of every day methods that people use to live their every day lives garfinkel: focuses on our every day routines and activities (including conversations, attending lecture, going shopping, getting coffee, etc) Daily activities are done methodologically, we don"t do things randomly- we learn the quickest, most pragmatic way to do things. Method = how you use this knowledge. Our culture changes, and so do the methods- order isn"t static because culture isn"t static. As our norms and rules change, so do our choices: self-serve check out and reusable bags reflect changes in our culture. U. s. sociologist, taught at u. c. l. a: influenced by; durkheim (social facts), schutz (phenomenology), symbolic interactionism. Garfinkel thought these structures were external, act on us, and impose their will.
