Soc 3307- qualitative research- epistemological issues, choosing methodologies and research questions survey vs interview. Surveys: large numbers, allows for large comparisons of groups, institutions, countries etc, relative ease of data presentation and tabulation, can analyze relationship (eg gender and satisfaction, can control for different factors (dependent, independent and control variables. Interviews: provides in depth information on answers( asks why people feel certain ways, can reveal unexpected relationships, provides richer, more detailed, in depth information, can investigate multiple and complex relationships. It has no theory or paradigm that is distinctively its own. Nor does [it] have a distinct set of methods or practices (denzin and lincoln, 2011: 6) Qualitative research is a set of material practices that make the world visible. Qualitative researchers study things in their natural settings, attempting to make sense of or interpret phenomena in terms of the meanings people bring to them. (denzin and lincoln, 2011: 3) What is qualitative methods : non-statistical, but empirical and rigorous.
