Lecture 6 photovoice, storytelling, and narrative research practices. Community based researchers reject the traditional research practices utilizing the qualitative knowledge construction. Research = dual purposed: generate knowledge. Researcher as the social activist: change in perception of the research and researcher, required new methodologies that could engage marginalized communities as well as empower participants to create positive changes within their immediate environment. Photovoice = applied sociology: sociology for purposes outside of academic setting to produce positive social change through intervention, participant or client focused, distinct from basic sociology which is discipline focused. Incorporate pictures with titles, captions, and written components to bring the realities of the photographer"s lives to the public and policy makers to spur change. Critical perspective (photovoice is most aligned with this perspective: generally associated with social change efforts and participant empowerment, possesses a transformative potential for individuals and their communities, often centered within a critical perspective, within an intervention context.
