Popular explanations such as these feature prominently within studies of terrorism : brainwashing political exclusion & oppression rational choice poverty, cultural factors frustration-aggression identity crisis mental illness narcissism relative deprivation. Psychologist such as bandura, bjorgo, crenshaw, horgan, reich, silke & taylor and quayle illuminated individual factors that contribute to political violence. Salib (2003) & rosenberger (2003) argue that these bombers may be suffering from shared or paranoid delusions. For lachkar (2002) they have a borderline personality disorder, dominated by shame. Studies shown that many terrorists originated outwith brainwashing centers. Socialization important (chapter 5 expands on this), introducing individuals to ideas/behavior/ people & contributing to shifting levels of restraint & collective identification: ** socialization is fundamentally different from brainwashing!
