Sociology 2240E Lecture Notes - Lecture 18: False Consciousness, Railways Act 1921, Rationality
Document Summary
Substantive sociology: construction and use of ideal types. Will not explain anything without turning it into social actions; people in the actions are acting w/ meanings. Social action: things humans engage in w/ meaning: zweckrational: also called means-end"s rationality . This is an orientation when the human actor doing it understands that they can vary how they are doing things and they can vary the goals of what they are doing. Suggests we are in charge of our own lives. We need power and authority; most people do not have the ability to achieve their goals. Means can vary but the goals remains *fixed according to a value. Means the goals can change just as long as the actor thinks that they are still consistent with a value. Not thinking about what they are doing and why, they are just involved. The means and the ends of actions (goals) are fixed; ritual.
