AN100 Lecture 6: An100 Lecture 6
Document Summary
Human beings need to know who they are and what their place in the world is, every person has a social identity that defines who we are and how we stand in relation to others. We need to put people into some sort of category, and we need some idea of what type of relationship might exist between us. People make assumptions about us, and we all make assumptions about other people. Factors such as gender, sexuality, race, class, religion, nationality, and ethnicity help to define us. While it"s true we are unique in many ways we are also easily fit into social categories within that uniqueness. We sort of mutually construct each other when we deal with other people each person trying to put the other in some sort of social order. We sometimes interact with people based on their social role and persona not so much their individual personality and particular characteristics.
