Assignment: concentrate on need to ask questions and observations Cyclades - 3500, 3000 bc we found first evidence of figurines made of marble, indigenous to these islands - first evidence of civilization - not an anatomically correct figurine, probably a goddess of some sort - need written evidence to get into the minds and ideas of people, we can only cast an appreciative eye on the objects - the objects have a posture where the arms are in front of the body, only have speculations - they were all found in one place, it may have been important - one of the objects is playing a harp, shows there must have been technology and the creation of music - this culture suggests to us that in those islands we have some kind of civilized activity Crete – Early Minoan Civilization - Minoan Crete - Sir Arthur evans found buildings that showed a high level of civilizations - Culture found here is Minoan culture - This culture gave us evidence of buildings - There is a smaller palace on Phaistos made without concrete made with chiseled stone - Knossos palace has pillars and sir Arthur evans thought he would rebuild Knossos to show us its past glory, it is difficult to know where the Minoan culture starts and where Evans does his part, he painted the pillars The palace economy – we see this here, everything produced is brought into the palace and then distributed, very central part of crete and early civilization, suggests that we are talking about a time where there is a social hierarchy. Also suggests that trade is very important to the Minoans. - lining the bottom of the palace are huge jars which may have been used to held olive oil, wheat, barely - the jars all over suggests to us that this is a warehouse where all the produce is brought - suggests they were loaded onto ships. - Minoans had many ships, they may have transported these jars short distances - Blue jar found suggests that at this early time the science of painting pottery has been created, had to find paint that would not burn off or intensify with the heat - Flotilla Fresco Art Thera Scene Akrotiri depicts a man holding rudders and it looks like they are transporting huge jars, in the picture we can see trade happening and we see the palace central to the picture perhaps central in society - Minoans language is Linear A and we don’t know what it is - We have been able to figure out the sounds of the symbols, this suggests that this is an unknown language - Perhaps originates in the Coppisses mountains which has an array of different languages - Frescos (around 2700 bc) – involves putting plaster onto a wall, leveling it perfectly, while the plaster is wet the paint is applied. La Parisienne shows us we can see personalities and attributes in paintings. - In Minoan culture the boobs showed, we see this in adorants fresco, this suggests that there was city life because this type of beautiful dress suggests leisure and wealth the fresco had a lot of women, showing that they were important - Knossos frescos showed tapestry, jewelry and women - Minoan boys fresco art Akrotiri we see the first indication of boxing which indicates there is a city - Throne Hall Knossos – there is a throne that holds a central location in the room, the groove in the throne is shaped as a womans bottom, suggesting that there is a society which is matriarchal - Griffons on the wall in this throne room could be indications of femininity but we don’t know which is original or evans - Admirals Flotilla Three Panels – we do not see any indications of war, just peaceful with lots of boats, indicates that war does not exist, the culture on crete is unique because around crete there is evidence of warfare - Have found no weapons here - Found a lot of double headed bronze axes, cannot be used as a weapon, it is more symbolic than anything else, since they are found all over the place these are probably religious objects, probably associated with some sort of cult or religious purposes - Mythology can help us to understand the connection of the world labyrinth to the name of this weapon, we know the root of the world means a double headed axe but we call it a maze - Left us a lot of material culture but n
