Document Summary

Unicellular organisms consist of a single cell (the cell itself is an organism) Multicellular organisms ( example humans) can have specialized cell for different functions, but cells have same basic structure. Prokaryotic and eukaryotic does not define if a cell is unicellular or multicellular. Cell theory: all organisms are composed of one or more cells, cells are the basic structural and functional unit of life, cells come from other pre-existing cells. Large cells have less surface area per unit volume. Large cells less capable of transporting materials across plasma membrane. The volume of a cell determines the chemical capacity of that cell. The surface area determines how much capacity can be supported. They (cid:374)eed to stay s(cid:373)all so that the (cid:448)olu(cid:373)e does(cid:374)"t outstrip the surfa(cid:272)e area. Cytoplasm(liquid with all of these structures inside): cytosol (is the aqueous liquid in the cell)/organelles (eukaryotes vs porkaryotes)/cytoskeleton (gives the cell its shape)
