BI111 Lecture Notes - Lecture 28: Generation Time, Biological Dispersal
Document Summary
Ecologists study levels of organizaion ranging from individual organisms to the biosphere. Study of the interacions between organisms (bioic) and their environments (abioic) Ecologists use experimental or observaional data: field or laboratory studies used to test predicions by manipulaing variables, data collected about natural experiments do not require. Someime hypotheses framed in mathemaical models: allows computer models to simulate natural events and large-scale experiments. Overarching goal of ecology is to understand the causes and consequences of changes of populaion/community structure. Geographic range: overall spaial boundaries within which a populaion lives. Habitat: speciic environment in which a populaion lives, as a characterized by its bioic and abioic features. Oten a diicult task: too many, crypic. Step 1: capture a random sample of individuals (n1) that are marked. Step 2: released marked individuals back into populaion. Step 3: capture a second random sample of individuals (n2), some of whom are makred (n2m)
