The Flower: What is it from an evolutionary/developmental point of view?
Von Goethe "Attempt to Interpret the Metamorphosis of Plants"
Reproductive organ of the plant
The flower is a modified shoot in which the leaves of that compressed shoot have become sepals,
petals, stamens and carpels.
A lot of the evolutional flower can be explained as a co-evolutionary phenomenon in 100's and
1000's of lineages with flowers
Type of Flowers depending on their sexual organs:
1. Hermaphrodite ("complete") [both genders in the flower]
2. Unisexual ("incomplete") [only one sex of the plant only stamen-male if just ovary then its only-
female]
Types of Plants depending on the gender of their flowers
1. Hermaphrodite (hemophro flowers)
2. Monoecious ( male and female present on same individual)
3. Dioecious (male and female on different individuals)
