Chapter 11: mutations originate as damage to dna. The normal version of the gene is called wild type (more common in population) or wt allele. The mutated abnormal version of the gene is called mutant or mutant allele. It is likely that all humans at one time had black hair. Over time hair colour mutations accumulated and led to the diverse hair colours that are present today. We term these different alleles for hair colour as polymorphisms since one isn"t necessarily wild type and that these variants are present in high frequencies.
