Civilization and its discontents: society is a good thing but it is also a bad thing, the notion that you are completely free is not true. State of nature: discontent with civilization because of the unhappiness that it produces leads to a fantasy of returning to a(cid:374) id(cid:455)lli(cid:272) state of (cid:374)ature. Individual liberty is not an asset of civilization. It was greatest before there was any civilization, but even then it was worthless because no one was in a position to defend it: the development of civilization is the development of restrictions on personal liberty.
