Civilization and its discontents: society is a good thing but it is also a bad thing, the notion that you are completely free is not true. Individual liberty is not an asset of civilization. It was greatest before there was any civilization, but even then it was worthless because no one was in a position to defend it: the development of civilization is the development of restrictions on personal liberty.
