Perception process of interpreting the messages of our senses to provide order and meaning to the environment. Three components of perception: the perceiver their experience, needs and emotions can effect this or her perceptions of a target. One of the most important characteristics of the perceiver that influences his or her impressions of a target is experience (develops their expectations, current perceptions) Perceptual defence tendency for the perceptual system to defend the perceiver against unpleasant emotions: the target perception involves interpretation and the addition of meaning to the target. Target is ambiguous and perceivers have a need to resolve such ambiguities: the situation the situational context in which the perception occurs. Most important effect of the situation is to add information about the target. Social identity theory theory that states that people form perceptions of themselves based on their personal characteristics and memberships in social categories. Personal identity based on our unique personal characteristics.
