Personality relatively stable set of psychological characteristics that influences the way an individual interacts with his or her environment; does not change much over course of life. Mainly influenced by heredity and environmental/situational factors, equally weighted. Dispositional approach individuals possess stable trait or characteristics that influence their attitudes and behaviours. Situational approach characteristics of the organizational setting influence people"s attitudes and behaviours. Interactionist approach i(cid:374)di(cid:448)idual"s attitudes and behaviour are a function of both dispositions and the situation. Trait activation theory traits lead to certain behaviours only when the situation makes the need for the trait significant. Extraversion the extent to which a person is outgoing versus shy. Emotional stability/neuroticism appropriate emotional control, higher the emotional control the lower the neuroticism. A minimum threshold is needed but beyond that it is open to debate m. Agreeableness extent to which a person is friendly and approachable. Conscientiousness degree to which a person is responsible and achievement oriented.
