Focuses on relationship between modernity and serial killer. Modernity has given rise to certain things that allows serial murder to exist. 6 preconditions that are distinctively modern: mass media, rise of celebrity culture, rise of serial killer identity, anonymity. How we interact and relate to one another. Growth of cities/ability to migrate/travel means interactions are fleeting easy to blend in/be anonymous. Fewer people paying attention to other"s whereabouts/safety: rationality. A way of thinking that is void of value considerations. Not as common for values/beliefs to be passed down from generations unquestioned. People can chose their own code of ethics can choose set of beliefs that doesn"t align with norm (i. e. violates law: cultural frameworks of denigration. Choosing excluded groups (i. e. prostitutes, homeless) as victims: opportunity structures. Vulnerable victims (i. e. groups listed in previous point) give more opportunity to serial killers: society may be engineered. Subculture of violence and the state where the killer was socialized during childhood.
