In order to make sense of serial homicide, you must understand the sociology behind it. Maybe law enforcement is better in catching criminals. The tough on crime sentences (longer sentences: serial killer crimes do not fit with our anxieties anymore, today our anxieties are terrorism and this has led to a decline in the focus or attention to serial killers. Cultural frameworks of denigration: some media accounts often suggest that the victims are random but that is often not the case, haggerty claims that this choice of victims both reflect and reproduce society"s value system. Opportunity structures: the prostitutes, elderly etc, leaves them more vulnerable which provides offenders with more opportunity to kill, a prostitute who is working alone is very easy to kill because sosicety has forgotten these people.
