Document Summary

Cause of crime lies outside of the individual. 1 of the 3 main traditions of sociological explanations of crime types of control over them would-be criminal: deterrence, earlier studies, weighting the pros and cons. Sykes and matza delinquency theory: techniques of neutralization. Learned techniques: people know the rules and don"t feel like it"s the right or better option. Uses neutralization in order to commit crime. Delinquency= young criminals that know what they are doing is wrong. Comparting to sutherland"s differentiation association theory: criminals learn definitions favourable to crime but sykes and matza provide actual definitions and suggest that criminals don"t reject the norms of society, values that people hold in justifying crime. Not subculture- no guilt or remorse: criminal commit crimes when they don"t reject norms, example: communities that lack multiculturalism. Subcultural contexts are codes of behaviour that are constructed, developed, created to stand in contradiction to dominant values.
