CC290 Lecture Notes - Lecture 19: Symbolic Interactionism, Travis Hirschi, Labeling Theory
Document Summary
Sociological approaches to crime causation- control and labeling theory. Both asks why do people commit crime and what"s the causes of crime. Interpretations and socialization are a part of control theory. Inside and outside of the person: lombroso through it was inside the person, looking at physical characteristics, beccaria said preventing crime is the punishment and the legal system needed to be changed. Labeling tells us about their environment, kinds of controls (mechanisms surround people informal/formal) People can be controlled by their bonds: we assume that people are self-interested, classical theory, people get rude. Social values are more valuable such as family, weighting choices based on relationships, feelings, certain reputation, value of social safety net (stay in the position that we"re in) Commitment: don"t want to give up/ let someone down, feeling accomplishment/successful, learn to see improvement in others and in yourself, while celebrating success.
