31 views5 pages

Document Summary

17: representation is the production of meaning of the concepts in our minds through language. It means that we all belong to the same culture. That"s why culture is defined as shared meanings: defined as: the act of putting ideas into words painting sculpture, films, etc. other mediums of communication. Anything can be a sign: person, song, ad, building: we are surrounded by signs. The relationship between a signified and signified is arbitrary: the relationship is based on convention, there is no natural connection, its based on habit, ritual. Meaning is context dependent: the connotative meaning of a sign is not stable or permanent. Polysemy: a sign is capable of producing many meanings and the signified or connotative meaning of a sign is not necessarily stable or permanent: this will not necessarily stable or permanent, this will not mean that forever.
