Mass media constituted powerful one-way systems for communication from the few to the many. Contemporary societies can be claimed to be characterized by mediation of much of our social experience: contemporary world = mediated or mediatized societies. Mediated images of the object can be transmitted to widely dispersed mass audiences: we live in a generalized elsewhere , much time spent consuming mediated narratives, society of the spectacle . Critical tradition under the influence of marxism has been concerned with the question of the media"s role as an agent of powerful groups.
