Document Summary

An individual"s willingness to pay for a certain good is determined by his/her personal preferences. Different individuals will have a different wtp for different goods and services, as well as environmental assets like clean air and fresh water. Wtp for environmental assets reflects both personal values as well as ability to pay. It means we could get people to consume less energy in two ways. Both figures 3-1 and 3-2 depict the economic concept of diminishing wtp, or in other words, as more units of a good are consumed, the wtp for each additional unit of that good declines. Marginal wtp at a given consumption level can be thought of as the price a person would be willing to pay for one more unit of the good or service. Total wtp captures all of the area under the wtp schedule.
