Reading Fiction – Lecture 1
Why do we tell stories?
"Narrative writing drawn from the imagination rather than from history or fact. The term is most
frequently associated with novels and short stories" - ( Harmon and Holman 212).
We all speculate, imagine, and tell stories even if we are not novelists.
We spend about half of our waking hours - 1/3 of our lives on earth – fantasizing
Why do we spend so much time doing this?
Pattern recognition and making sense of the world
Theory of mind: attribute consciousness and agency to everything around us
Cultural learning: a way of passing on knowledge,
Make sense of complex social relationships: helped our ancestors make sense
flight simulators: rehearsal for real life, reading is correlated to social and empathy
Persuasiveness of narrative: narrative is a way for you to persuade others to see things from your
point of way, also ad's work better with a story than just straight forward facts
