This lesson introduces the concept of ecosystem management or applying ecological concepts and processes to resource management. Downstream to observe a fragile ecosystem that has been disrupted directly by resource extraction and indirectly by long-range air pollution. Lessons from this environment can aid in developing more ecologically sound management practices in the future. We then follow- up on the clayoquot case study to examine ecological concepts applied to the forests of. The impacts of deforestation and agricultural intensification have been directly related to declines in biodiversity and wildlife habitats which can be considered as non-consumptive resources. This section will introduce the concept of non-consumptive resources and environmental values which goes beyond strictly economic considerations. It also considers the decline of species and spaces and the management response to try and protect them. The video - biodiversity - will introduce you to the concept of biodiversity and new approaches to study and manage the landscape with the focus on ecology.
