The fishery industry is an important resource globally, providing an important protein food source for many developing countries. It has been the centre of controversy in the nineties over issues of resource depletion and resource ownership. This lesson will review the concept of ownership and common property. The emphasis from the text and video examines the factors that have lead to the decline of the east coast cod stocks, global fisheries and whale species. The text also considers the increasing problem of marine pollution including large-scale disasters such as the recent oil spill off the coast of spain. To start this lesson we will introduce the water cycle. The focus of the next three lectures deals primarily with water resources and impacts on global hydro systems. Water is one of our most essential resources and is necessary for all members of the global ecosystem. It is also a commodity, a renewable resource that has many uses and users.
