Competition to grab land between french and brits. Groups of people who argue for colonies cause if we don"t we"ll become weaker. Change of opinion: question of national interest, colonial expansion wasn"t accepted everyone. Liberal economists: against colonial protectionism, too expensive to acquire (war) and administer. Free traders, against monopoly: nationalists: recapture alsace-loraine taken by the germans in 1871 franco- French took it back after wwi treaty of versailles in 1919.
