Document Summary
Gs211 lesson 8: sustainable development (cid:1) (cid:1) (cid:1: sustainability in context. Rise of sustainable development parallel to rise of neoliberalism on world stage. Main question of sustainable development: how to preserve our natural environment while at the same time allowing human beings to pursue their livelihoods and improve standards of living. Development policies based on economical growth since modernization have increased standards of living and life expectancy. Have created tons of environmental problems: deforestation, depleted fisheries, dwindling clean water supplies, industrial pollution. So some see globalization and continued economic growth as the solution to these environmental problems while others argue that development (narrow view of economic growth) is the cause of environmental degradation. Focused on boosting economic growth through technology and efficient use of resources. Countries that could not induce wide-scale industrialization focused on the export of cash-crops (coffee, cocoa, corn, cotton) and beef. Led to massive deforestation in global south.
