HR260 Lecture Notes - Lecture 14: Alternative Media, Culture Industry, Advocacy Journalism
Document Summary
In this lesson we consider the civil and political right to freedom of expression, especially as it relates to democracy and the media. This lesson speaks to the feminist contribution regarding the idea that human rights are indivisible in that no right is secure unless all rights are secure (goodhart, 37). Without freedom of expression, especially as practiced by the media in acting as the fourth estate, citizens may never know that their state is engaging in repression, torture and genocide in their name. Without such knowledge, citizens are unlikely to pressure their governments to cease these and other human rights violations.
