In reality, practice does not guarantee that a learner will become more pro cient. Careful practice design can lead to gains in skill pro ciency. Consider the in uence of: learner, task, environment. Involves breakdown of skill into natural parts, practice separately, integrate into entire task. May not be the most e cient way to teach. This is better for re nement rather than to learn the whole task. Lets the learner experience early success, leading to increased motivation. Lets learners practice on problem areas without wasting time on whats already been mastered. Items to consider: nature of the skill, capability of the learner, part practice techniques. E ectiveness of part & whole practice depends on 2 features of the skill. Task organization: how much does the performance of each part of the skill depend on the component that precedes it. Task complexity: high executing a jump serve, tying a knot, low putting a golf ball, clapping your hands.
