Document Summary

Chapter 11: nervous system: autonomic and motor systems. Most effector organs and tissues in the body (cardiac muscle, smooth muscle, visceral organs, glands & adipose tissue) Dual innervation; both branches innervate most organs. Parasympathetic nervous system is most active during resting conditions, stimulates digestive orga(cid:374)s a(cid:374)d i(cid:374)hi(cid:271)its the (cid:272)ardiovas(cid:272)ular syste(cid:373) (cid:862)rest a(cid:374)d digest(cid:863) Sympathetic nervous system most active during excitation or physical activity, fight or flight response (blood flow shift from gi organs to skeletal and cardiac muscles, nrg stores mobilized. Autonomic ganglia: peripheral structures that neurons use to communicate with one another through synapses. Preganglionic ganglia: neurons that travel from the cns to the ganglia. Postganglionic neuron: the neurons that travel from the ganglia to the effector organ. In each ganglion is the axon terminals of the preganglionic neurons and the cell bodies & dendrites of post ganglionic neurons. One preganglionic neuron synapses with several postganglionic neurons.
