The diocletian political revolution: the tetrarchy, 293, division of empire into 4 prefectures. 2 in the east, two in the west: divided into dioceses, overseen by a vicar, each half ruled by an augustus and a caesar. At retirement or death of augustus, the caesar becomes next augustus. Rome under the tetrarchy: east is richer than the west, east- greek is spoken, west- latin is spoken, language division.
