Was thought that a select group of individuals were born with leadership traits that made them great leaders . Much of the research was conducted when most leaders (political, industry, religious, etc) were male. In the late 1940s, stogdill suggested that the key traits of leaders include: intelligence, alertness, insight, responsibility, initiative, persistence, self-confidence, and sociability. * very early trait theory considered height to be a necessary trait * By the early 1990s, researchers identified: drive, motivation, integrity, confidence, cognitive ability and task knowledge to the list of traits.
