Underlying assumption: tension between unconscious impulses and the current constraints of life, conflict/tension between id and ego/superego cause anxiety, psychoanalysis, goal is to explore unconscious motivations and conflicts. Conflicts between unconscious/irrational impulses (id) and superego. How: awareness of id (devil inside of us, reduces some compliance with superego, strength to the ego (ego makes daily conscious living decisions in life) What is (cid:498)the problem(cid:499: we become maladaptive because we repress how we handle conflicts (like suppressing at an unconscious level, repress moods and behaviors to try and be accepted by society. Goal: help patients achieve insight, release them from their repression. Insight = conscious awareness of psychodynamics underlying problems.
