Document Summary

Motives + desires lie beneath surface (tip of iceberg shows process beneath surface of behaviour) Freud saw humans as selfish, held by barriers of civilization, striving for primal gratification. Childhood = time of taming from parents, then it becomes internal. Proposed most behaviour is and unconscious process rather than controlled by the individual. Ego - consolidates id in real world, delays gratification, rational, anxiety when id cannot be controlled, developes defence mechanisms. Superego - goes 15mph, moral arbiter (thinks through, allows ego process to act appropriately and not manifest every id desire), initially reflected parents" thoughts before it gains social/individual incorporation. Brought attention to freud"s failures to recognize social & cultural factors and showed, rather, personality develops through childhood experiences, but not sole contributor to personality. I will be a goal achiever that puts every minute of my time to good use.
