Effects sleep through sound, temperature, light (seasonal), shift work, stress, etc. Noise, mainly, can increase arousal, heart rate and decreases deep sleep. Time in slow wave sleep (stages 3+4) are lower. Body temperature (low/slow rise) = night owl (fast/high) rise = morning lark. Partial (no more than 5 hours/night for more than 1 or more consecutive nights) Insomnia (can"t fall asleep), sleep apnea (stop breathing suddenly) , narcolepsy (fall asleep suddenly, usually due to stress/excitement) Rem dreams are story-like, vivid, bizarre, can occur over series of nights. Important for problem solving, safe role- play and fantasy play. Activates hindbrain, then cortex turns information into something making more sense. Common dream themes: being chased sex, falling, arriving late, teaching/lessons. No agreed upon theory of dreams, but it is mostly accepted that dreams have meaning (symbolism to the individual) Freud gave theory of wish fulfillment through pleasure/pain and commonly associated dreams w. sexual content/ aggression manifestation/repression.
