RE103 Lecture Notes - Lecture 29: Common Era, Satyagraha, Trimurti
Document Summary
Lesson four: hindu and south asian mythical context. Similar to the neo-pagan and aboriginal traditions, the hindu tradition is an umbrella term that covers the vast number of different rituals practices and understandings. However, all the practices and ideas emerged from four texts, known as the vedas. Pagan and aboriginal traditions, the hindu tradition does not have a specific founder, rather the ancient teachings have been passed along through oral traditions to the next generations before being put into written form. An emphasis on ritual practice exceeds the importance of belief, making these traditions less centralized and more localized through ritual practices that vary in different regions that account for contextual shifts in geography, foods, music, and customs. For example, there are notable distinctions between hindu murti practices that occur in northern sections of india, as compared to southern parts of south.
