Sociology of religion: studies that conditions and effects of religious beliefs, symbols practices, and organizational forms. Sacred things are those which the [religious] interdictions protect and isolate; profane things, those to which these interdictions are applies and which must remain at a distance from the rst (durkheim) Distinguishing between the sacred and the profane - Industrialization of society + modernization of culture -> secularized societies. Causes: modern sciences, diversity of religions, individualism, technology less likely to turn to religious authorities than scienti c resources for answers; religion and science con ict each other. In modern society there are many different religious beliefs, which takes away one religions power to have a monopoly over peoples minds. Society also supports pluralism (respecting other peoples beliefs and cultures). Modern society becomes too individualistic pulls people away from religion. fetishization of commodity: consumerism is the new religion.
