Document Summary

Feminist theory that examines the relationship between patriarchy and capitalism. Class = axis of exploitation in capitalism. Sex/gender = axis of oppression in patriarchy. Patriarchy + capitalism -- patriarchy is materially based in the control over women"s labour by men. Men are the breadwinners (productive labour) -- type of labor that creates a product. Women = private sphere (in the household, of the family) Unpaid reproductive labour -- type of labour that helps to reproduce the labour force. Domestic labour directly contributes to the economy because the economy cannot function without the domestic labour force being socialized. E. g. being the childbearers, performing emotional labour. There is no production without reproduction and reproductive labour is itself productive. Occupational sexism -- a series of discriminatory practices, actions, statements, and rewards, based on a person"s sex that occur in the employment setting. A) wage discrimination: a man is paid more than a woman in the same job.
