SY101 Lecture 9 Socialization
Socialization
- Learn to become members of society
- Internalize norms, values and social roles
- Role: expectations attached to different social positions
- Nature vs Nurture debate
o Nature
▪ Biology determines who you become
▪ This is an unpopular outlook (biological determinists)
o Nurture
▪ Environment determines who you become
▪ Looking at eugenics and creating the “ideal human”
▪ Social constructivists adopt this way of thinking
Mead
- Symbolic interactionist
- Took on a social constructivist position
- Socialization: objectification process (taking on the role of the other)
- We learn roles by observing how people respond to us
- Our personalities develop by engaging with others
- “Me”: objective side of an individual (socialized)
o Needs to be developed in childhood
- “I”: subjective side of an individual (active and the agent)
Mead’s Theory of Socialization:
- Play
o Play→generalized other
- Stage 1
o Imitate those who are important (parents)
- Stage 2
o Role play and pretending
- Stage 3
o Complex games
▪ In terms of sports, you should let kids play different positions
- Stage 4
o Generalized other : understand what is expected of them
