Document Summary

Classic sociologists position: human have no instincts. Instincts: complex pattern of behaviour that is genetically determined: cant override. Reflex: single, simple, automatic response to stimulus. Twin studies (twins studied apart: often v. similar, but may be quite different, more complex behaviour, greater influence of environment. James fallon: able to pick out serial killers by brain scan. Sociologists: biology gives us potentials, but doesn"t determine behaviour. Our self image is based on how we think others see us. Children develop self image by adopting how others treat them. Three elements: we imagine how we look to a significant other, we imagine that person"s judgment of our appearance, self-feeling or reaction arises in relation to the other"s judgment. Our behaviour depends on: other peoples judgment of us, their treatment of us. Things perceived to be real, are real in their consequences. Self fulfilling prophecy: people live up to expectations placed on them.
