Children, power, and the struggle against sexual abuse. Lecture 11: children and social justice: part 2. Theme: kitzinger challenges the way we typically think about childhood sexual abuse. The construction of childhood innocence ironically may perpetuate abuse. Innocence is often what draws abusers to children. Children who have been abused are no longer seen innocent and are sometimes penalized for it. The construction of innocence often serves to disempower children and reinforces adult authority which may enable abuse to take place. Issue of csa makes us question what childhood really is. This rhetoric is problematic for 3 reasons . It titillates the abuser; kiddie porn; ads of young girls in makeup; baby doll nightdresses; girls t-shirts forbidden fruit . Being innocent means being naive and unaware of sexual cues, advances, and ideals. Child is criticized and penalized for have sexual thoughts, or is sexually aware.
