ADMS 3502 Lecture Notes - Lecture 47: Biliary Tract, Alcoholic Hepatitis, Hepatocyte
Document Summary
Ggt is marker for all disease and strongly associated with alcohol abuse. So could be indicating early alcohol abuse: md discusses the situation with the patient. Either the patient didn"t abstain from alcohol or the previous insult from alcohol has become irreversible and there is ongoing adverse disease being carried out in the liver. Note: ggt is not that great of a marker of alcohol abuse but traditionally been used as a. Alcoholic hepatitis: modest ast & alt, <10-fold elevated, ast: alt = 2:1, ggt , lesser alp if bili >5-fold or pt , then severe, alb if low, then chronicity (cirrhosis) Binge-drinking can lead to alcoholic hepatitis inflammation in the liver (zone 3). If bilirubin is increased 5-fold or increase in clotting time would indicate severe current insult which would bear on the prognosis. Also, if albumin is low, most likely chronic alcohol abuse (underlying cirrhosis).
