Nationalism is built out of this idea that a group is built out of a community that shares an emotional connection to that identity. Not everyone in a nation state shares the same nationality, background, worldview, etc. Getting someone to believe in a nation state is no easy feat. Creates rules to uphold citizenship in these rules are guidelines to who belongs and who doesn"t. A practice that common to the creation of all national identities is the idea of the other" (someone not like them who doesn"t belong) Eg we as canadians define ourselves by others" (america) well we"re not americans . The other can live outside or inside the borders of the nation-state. Britain others" it"s colonies by thinking of them as inferior or needing to be governed. Immigration is a way in which others are produced. Groups within boundaries of the nation state that are considered others". Live in canada, but not seen as canadians.
