Prisoners would monitor their own behaviour and they would think they are being watched all the time. The sense of being watched that produced conforming behaviour. When linked to ideas of mass media is connected as one way to manipulate peoples thoughts. There is no need for arms, just a gaze. A type of power through a gaze that is continually exercised. Fear of social pressure, the idea that we are being watched by others. Video cameras and social pressures, we feel we are being watched by others on a social level. Power and knowledge we focused on last week. Is a dominant form of power in modern society. Panopticon is an instrument of and capable of imaging you are being gazed if the person in power becomes faceless. A faceless gaze that transformed into a field of perception. Effect was to introduce a state of understanding of consciousness and perminate disability of power.
